Don Giulio (Nanni Moretti), a Roman Catholic priest, returns to the village in which he grew up to replace the previous pastor, whose fathering of a child caused a scandal. Hoping to provide his hometown with a solid spiritual foundation, Giulio instead discovers that his old friends and family members have been living hedonistic lifestyles. After attempting — and failing — repeatedly to lead his loved ones down a more virtuous path, Giulio assumes a state of cynical bemusement to cope.
